Having recently celebrated World Ocean Day on the 8th of June 2021. We thought we would share some facts about our ocean and how humans are constantly destroying nature.
The Ocean can be described as the engine to all life on the planet. However, it is sadly under severe threat. The biggest problem is excessive pollution from single use plastic that is dumped into our oceans. It is said to be most visible in developing countries such as Asia and Africa as garbage collection systems are not well maintained and often non-existent.
Did you know these devastating facts about plastic pollution?
- Half of the world’s Plastic Pollution was made in the last 15 years,
- Production of Plastic has increased from 2.3 million tons in 1950 to over 448 million tons in 2015 and is expected to double in 2050,
- Over 8 million tons of plastic lands up in our Oceans every year this is equivalent to placing five garbage bags full of trash along every inch of coastline,
- Plastic is known to be strong and durable which means it takes even longer to decompose the estimated time is over 400 years before it breaks down.
Having heard these harsh facts and shocking statistics of how severe plastic pollution is. It is important to become proactive and help reduce the amount of plastic waste in our oceans. If we all make smaller changes to our daily habits we could be in a completely different position in years to come.
How can you help?
- Join beach pick up drives, there are so many in and around Cape Town all you need to do is show up and pick up trash!
- Start separating your waste into different bins, general waste, plastic waste and compost.
- Educate yourself on the importance of preserving the planet by watching a David Attenborough documentary.
- Purchase sustainable products that last you a lifetime and do not need to be replaced on a regular basis.
